Brisbane is a city with a lot of surprises. There always seems to be something going on around the corner… whether it’s free mini-golf, live music or yummy produce markets. The city has a relaxed vibe and the bars, restaurants and clubs have a lot to offer.

The South Bank is amazing (especially at night) with numerous cafes, bars and restaurants intertwined with beautiful gardens, sculptures and open spaces. The South Bank is home to theatres, galleries, museums and libraries (post to follow) and last-but-not-least a lagoon!

Brisbane is the first lagoon I’ve been to and I loved having a beach in the middle of the city! The sand is golden and disappears into the clear blue waters which on a hot day is a great place to top up your tan, relax or go for a swim. During our time in Brisbane we spent several hours at the lagoon and pottering along the South Bank and it’s definitely one of my favourite places in Australia!

The architecture in Brisbane is an eclectic mix of the old and new and the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) campus has some amazing spaces! The main entertainment district in Brisbane is Fortitude Valley “where elegance and style meets grungy and offbeat”. Although we didn’t have time to explore the valley properly we did venture to the gay scene which is a bizarre mix of old working mens bars, drag karaoke and banging clubs! The scene in Brisbane is small, having only 4 bars/clubs but it’s an experience worth doing!

While at our hostel we randomly bumped into a friend-of-a-friend from back home, Bex. Bex was a lot of fun and made our time in Brisbane even more enjoyable and I’m proud to have introduced her to her first gay scene! Thanks Bex for an amazing night, we look forward to a repeat performance when we return!

Despite not knowing what to expect from Brisbane I really enjoyed our time there. The city has a lot to offer and is a great place to spend a few days. Most travellers dismiss Brisbane as somewhere to transit through but I urge future travellers to give it a go… spend some time exploring the city and be prepaid to venture a little further to find what Brisbane has to offer!
