After 3 nights bobbing up and down at sea in the Whitsundays and a couple more partying and recovering in Airlie Beach we got back on the infamous (but necessary) Greyhound and headed to Townsville, 276km (3 hours 31 minutes) away.
Like Airlie Beach, Townsville is used as a gateway city – in this case to Magnetic Island (post to follow) – unlike Airlie Beach, Townsville doesn’t have a lot to offer which is why we chose to stay 1 night!
Don’t get me wrong Townsville is a perfectly pleasant place and has some great architecture, shops, bars and a hike up to the top of Castle Hill if you’re feeling energetic – it’s just that compared to other great towns/cities in Australia and the natural beauty of Fraser Island and the Whitsunday Islands it struggles to keep up.
We spent an afternoon in Townsville walking along the seafront – with the ever present reminder of the danger of stingers – explored the town centre and grabbed a bite to eat before getting an early night ready for Magnetic Island!
Would I recommend Townsville? Sure, but the real gem is to follow!
